Childcare

In most families the role of childcare is taken on by both the father and mother of the child. As times have changed and the need for two steady incomes has grown the parents look for childcare elsewhere, whether it’s a crèche, childminder or even using an au pair to keep the child at home in its normal surroundings.  It is a major challenge for parents to find suitable child carers that is not only affordable but also fully qualified.  Anyone caring for young children under the age of eight years must be registered with Ofsted on what called the Early Years Register.  This not only makes sure the person is suitable to look after children but checks whether they have criminal records and also makes an inspection of the premises to look at any possible health and safety issues to the child’s welfare.

In most Western societies once a child is above the age of 5 years it is compulsory that they have some sort of education with most children attending school.  The responsibility of the child’s welfare becomes the schools for the whole time the child is attending; this is called "in lieu of parent supervision". When the parents are dead, missing or classed as unfit to look after the child state agencies such as social services takes responsibility of the child’s welfare.

It is still a debated by experts as to how effective paid childcare is and whether it is beneficial or damaging to the child.  The positive aspects of childcare where children are mixing with other children their age encourages social integration and self discipline which help towards a good education. As the first few years of a child’s life are the most important to improve their chances of reaching their full potential this debate with no doubt continue.
